Chevrolet Begins Launch Of New Chevrolet Aveo (Sonic) In China

Beginning in June, Shanghai GM will begin making deliveries of the all-new Chevrolet Aveo, or what Americans will be referring to as the Chevrolet Sonic.

Pricing has been placed between RMB 81,800 and RMB 111,800 and will be offered in both sedan and hatchback flavors.  Engine choices for the Chinese-spec model consist of a 1.4L S-TEC III engine, which is good for 76 kW (101 hp) and 131 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque and a 1.6L ECOTEC that produces 89 kW (119 hp) and 155 Nm (114 lb-ft) of torque. Both five and six-speed transmissions will be available.

In comparison, the Sonic will see the same boosted 1.4L and naturally aspirated 1.8L ECOTEC engines found in the current Chevy Cruze, but won’t be launching until later this fall.

Chevy Camaro Gets New... Cylinder Heads

Click to enlarge [A photo of the Camaro would have been more interesting, we know...]
A photo of the Camaro would have been more interesting, we know...
With the model currently on the market turning heads and winning more than a few battles with rival Camaro, there's little Chevrolet can do to increase the appeal of the Camaro some more. Even so, a little tweak every once in a while can do wonders for the business.

Since visually changing something in the new Camaro would make little sense, Chevrolet decided to tackle a problem that is on everybody's mind these days: fuel consumption. Or, in the case of the Camaro, fuel consumption versus power.

The solution to the dilemma, says Chevrolet, was as simple as it will be effective: cast both the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head into a single aluminum shape. The result, when applied to the 3.6L direct injection V6: engine weight reduced by 13 lbs. (6 kg) and a new EPA estimated fuel consumption figure of 30 mpg highway.

At the same time, thanks to an improved intake airflow, the power of the unit has been increased by 11 horsepower, while exhaust flow is estimated to be 10 percent better than in the previous V6.

“Reducing engine mass of this magnitude doesn’t happen often,” said Ameer Haider, GM assistant chief engineer for V6 engines.

“Engineering usually looks for reduction in terms of grams not pounds. It’s just like removing a set of golf clubs from your car when you don’t need them – ultimately it saves fuel. When combined with other mass reductions, the customer will see better fuel economy over time with better performance,” added Haider.

Chevy Camaro Convertible: Call It Analog Driving

I have been put off lately by cars that pretend to be engaging and fun to drive but wind up feeling more like drones in which the driver is decoration.

Cars really are taking over the point-A-to-point-B exercise. One can barely start the engine, shift into drive or change lanes without the vehicle issuing a chiding chime, tone, flashing light or vibration.

A BMW I drove recently simulated the sound and feel of a rumble strip if I ventured too close to the lane-dividing line. Some Volvos stop automatically before hitting an obstacle, in case you forget to do this yourself. And many vehicles ring a bell to let you know it is cold enough outside for ice to form on the road.

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible thinks we’re spoiled.

The rag-top version of the classic muscle car that Chevy revived last year hangs on to many of the seemingly old-fashioned formalities that make driving seem like more than a passive endeavor. First, you have to slide the key into the ignition slot and turn it. No smart key here. My test car, a V8 super sport model, also has a six-speed manual transmission, so driving it requires some work.

But oh, the rewards! As soon as the engine turns over I’m reminded of why people enjoy vintage muscle cars so much. The Camaro sounds wonderful and feels like a real machine. It rumbles and vibrates. Turning the steering wheel, pressing the clutch and shifting gears takes effort, though not enough to make driving a chore.

Of course the Camaro, like other modern vehicles, is packed with advanced electronics that control its engine and other systems. How else could a heavy car with 426 horsepower have a 25-mile-per-gallon fuel-economy rating?

But what makes this Camaro desirable is its convertible top. Chevy didn’t bother with an overly complicated, overrated retractable hard top that would use up trunk space. Instead it has a cloth soft top that is attractive, but of course looks best when it is folded down. Where the Camaro coupe looks a bit thick in the middle, the convertible shows off its hourglass waist and shapely hips once you get rid of the roof.

Driving top-down is a joy, in part because it lets the driver hear the howling engine more clearly when winding it out to 5000 rpm. It also improves visibility, which is a weakness in the hard-top Camaro’s pillbox cabin.

The Camaro convertible attacks twisting, narrow roads enthusiastically, without the loose, flexible and creaky feeling characteristic of many convertibles. It may incite recklessness by encouraging drivers to flout speed limits. But it also urges you to drive smoothly and conservatively enough to keep the rear wheels from spinning out of control. After all, the car has enough power to wear out its rear tires in an hour or two.

Convertibles are known for impracticality, and the Camaro is no family sedan. But it tries hard to be your daily driver. The interior is comfortable and the back seat is surprisingly accommodating for children’s safety seats. Our two boys loved riding in it to school, in part because of their friends’ reactions. Indeed, the way people look at you when you drive this drop-top is among its selling points.

The base Camaro convertible with a 312-horsepower V6 engine costs $29,150 while the top-of-the-line super sport version is $39,650. The base model has more than enough power and is a great value. But the V8′s muscle and song are hard to resist. Either way, the Camaro convertible is a lot of car, enjoyment and appeal, for the money.

2012 Chevy Camaro Gets More Power and Better Fuel Economy

2012_Chevy_Camaro_45th_edition_fr3.jpg

The 2012 Chevy Camaro is a little "greener" thanks to some updates that give it more power, but at the same time saving more gas and putting out fewer emissions.

The 2012 Camaro 3.6L V6 gets a new integrated exhaust manifold cylinder head that replaces a cast iron exhaust manifold, six bolts, a gasket and a heat shield and three bolts. This change reduces the engine weight by 13 pounds, which has helped to improve the gas mileage of the Camaro. The Camaro 2LS model now gets 30 mpg on the highway.

"Reducing engine mass of this magnitude doesn't happen often," said Ameer Haider, GM assistant chief engineer for V6 engines. "Engineering usually looks for reduction in terms of grams not pounds. It's just like removing a set of golf clubs from your car when you don't need them - ultimately it saves fuel. When combined with other mass reductions, the customer will see better fuel economy over time with better performance."

The 3.6L V6 now puts out 11 more horsepower (323-hp) thanks to a new larger intake valves, which have improved intake airflow by seven percent. Exhaust flow is also 10 percent better than the V6 in the 2011 model.

"The new, patented design benefits the customer in all the key areas without any tradeoffs, said Haider. "Emissions, performance, fuel economy, and noise all improve with the integrated exhaust manifold."

Cruze is turning out to be the next success story of Chevrolet in UK as it is delivering versatility with high quality. According to Chevy, Cruze will be able to get fuel economy of 28 mpg on the highway and around 42 miles per gallon on city roads. Upscale amenities, Fuel economy, Hydraulic clutch and Rear solid disc brakes are what making Cruze more powerful and superb in performance.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze is an efficient car that is fun to drive due to its small yet powerful engine that is designed for high performance. It gives you a driving experience that a motorist usually does not expect from a small compact car. It is tested several times for its brakes and comfortable drive. It is launched with ABS (Anti-lock brakes), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), Engine immobilizer, Electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and many options to make Cruze the way you like it. It is not just a car it is the sanctuary.

Interior & Exterior

The first impression of this car is quite impressive and the pleasant surprise continues inside. 4 way adjustable abundant seating, good passenger room, quality finish, large cargo space, front side and roof curtain airbags are the major advanced steps of Chevrolet from other small cars. Unlike other cars, Cruze offers a plenty of legroom in the rear and control knobs that are soft to touch and easy to use. Long wheelbase with short overhangs gives it an edgier and younger appeal that looks good to most of the eyes.

Chevy Cruze regulates voltage to boost fuel economy

2011 Chevrolet Cruze LT – Click above for high-res image gallery
The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is no slouch in the fuel economy department. In fact, the six-speed manual transmission-equipped Cruze Eco scored an official EPA rating of 28 miles per gallon city and 42 mpg highway. Those numbers put the Cruze Eco near the top of the fuel economy heap in its class.

Improving the Cruze's fuel economy required some innovative thinking on behalf of General Motors, and one solution The General dreamt up was to reduce the energy consumed by the vehicle's alternator. Officially, GM calls this patented technology Regulated Voltage Control (RVC) and here's how it cuts down on fuel consumption:

With RVC, the power that runs from the alternator to the battery is reduced from 14 volts to 12.8 volts under normal driving conditions. This allows the alternator to focus the power on the vehicle's electrical loads and avoid charging the battery with current it doesn't need.

When the voltage to the battery is reduced, the demand on the alternator is reduced. That in turn reduces the alternator's pull on the engine, allowing the engine to run more efficiently. With the engine running more efficiently, fuel economy is improved. The operation of RVC seems simple but its impact on gas consumption is nonetheless measurable. According to GM, RCV boosts the Cruze's fuel economy by 1.5 percent, allowing drivers to squeeze eight more miles out of a single tankful of gas.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze ECO Review

MPG-o-Matic 2011 Chevrolet Cruze ECO Review Summary: The 2011 Chevy Cruze ECO sedan is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in General Motors 2011 lineup, outside of the extended-range electric Chevy Volt. When equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, the Cruze ECO is capable of gas mileage that rivals many of the current hybrid cars on the market. The combination of a tiny turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, advanced aerodynamics, and an optimized manual gear set (with overdrive) deliver excellent real-world fuel economy, at a very attractive price point.

The front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2011 Chevrolet Cruze ECO is equipped with a tiny turbocharged 1.4-liter ECOtec VVT DOHC inline four-cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower (HP) and 148 foot pounds of torque.

The official fuel economy estimates for the manual-equipped 2011 Chevy Cruze ECO are 28 city / 42 highway miles per gallon. The six-speed automatic-equipped Cruze ECO is rated at a significantly lower 26 city / 37 highway.

We rolled up more than 500 miles in our Ice Blue Metallic review unit and had no problem slipping past the official mileage estimates, with an average of 43.9 MPG on the Interstate highway and 36.3 MPG combined, with temperatures ranging from the mid-teens through the high-thirties. The test vehicle was delivered with just over 1000 miles on the odometer.

Interstate Mileage Testing:
  • Cruise control set to 68 MPH, A/C off, windows up: 42.2 MPG
  • Cruise control off, target speed 60-72 MPH, A/C off, windows up: 45.7 MPG
The 2011 Cruze ECO is equipped with 17-inch forged polished alloy wheels clad with P215/55R17 ultra low rolling resistance Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max all-season tires.

Highway driving range is good when equipped with the manual transmission. The 2011 Cruze ECO is fitted with a 12.6 gallon fuel tank and is designed to run regular unleaded fuel. Standard Cruze models are fitted with a larger 15.6 gallon tank.

The four wheel anti-lock (ABS) disc brake system uses front disc and rear drum brakes. Four-wheel disc brakes are not available in the Cruze ECO, although they are optional in the Cruze 2LT and standard in the Cruze LTZ.

The Cruze ECO’s dash is designed with gas savings in mind. The center-mounted Drivers Information Center includes an individual tire pressure display, and a simultaneous display of both instant and average fuel economy data. A green upshift light begs for the manual transmission to be shifted into a higher gear at fuel-efficient RPMs.

With a six MPG highway bonus over the automatic, the most fuel-conscious drivers will opt for the ECO-Overdrive six-speed manual.

While the Cruze ECO isn’t fast, it handles well and is fun to drive … proving how enjoyable it can be to shift for yourself. Aerodynamic tweaks include a lower front grille air shutter, front air dam, mid-body aero panels and rear decklid spoiler.

Although the Cruze ECO’s interior is handsomely designed and the front buckets are supportive, luxurious touches are reserved for the 2LT and LTZ models. The Cruze ECO is not available with heated seats, leather seating surfaces, or lumbar support.

Our test unit was equipped with the Connectivity Plus option package, which includes cruise control, USB iPod integration, and hands-free Bluetooth, along with a leather wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls and a leather trimmed shifter.

There are two 12-volt outlets: one on the center console (between the shifter and cupholders) and one at the back of the center console. The USB jack is located inside the center console.

GM’s OnStar is standard, with six months of complimentary Directions & Connections service. A navigation system is not offered in the Cruze ECO, although it’s optional in the Cruze 2LT and LTZ.

The Cruze ECO’s rear seat provides 37.9 inches of head room and 35.4 inches of leg room. The rear seat lacks a center armrest and will be snug for taller passengers.
The trunk provides 15 cubic feet of cargo area, with a 60/40 fold-down rear seat to accommodate longer cargo. To save weight, the Cruze ECO uses a tire sealant and inflator kit, in lieu of a spare tire.

All-in-all, the 2011 Chevy Cruze ECO is an affordable, economical, and fun-to-drive compact sedan when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission. It’s been said that we Americans have become too lazy to drive manual transmission-equipped cars. The Cruze ECO just might be the car that reverses that trend.
